G.R.O.F.U.N. is a beautifully simple idea with a beautifully silly name. G.R.O.F.U.N. stands for 'Growing Real organic food in Urban Neighbourhoods' and coordinates groups of neighbours in communities to cooperatively grow food in their own back gardens, sharing labour, skills, resources and last but not least-the delicious home-grown produce itself. The aim of this project, funded by Awards for All, is to create a working model which can be adopted by more communities in the future and give the people at the grass roots the power back to sustain themselves and their families with healthy, fresh food in an ever more energy-scarce future. G.R.O.F.U.N. addresses the damaging effects of air freighted produce, over-packaging and the question of what is truly 'fresh'. G.R.O.F.U.N. is also developing its educational 'arm' too with plans to run gardening workshops with primary aged children in two Bristol schools beginning in the Autumn of 2008. 'Buzz words' for the GROFUN scheme are Peak Oil, Relocalization, community empowerment, education, friends, skills re-learning, exercise, relaxation and fun!
Get growing; have Fun!
